Captain January is a 1936 American musical comedy-drama film directed by David Butler. Shirley lives with a lighthouse keeper who rescued her when her parents drowned. A truant officer decides she should go to boarding school, but she’s rescued by relatives. Buddy Ebsen dances “At The Codfish Ball” with Shirley.
Father’s Little Dividend is a 1951 comedy film directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor. In this sequel to Father of the Bride (1950), Stanley Banks learns that his daughter Kay is going to have a baby. When they get the news everyone except Stanley is overjoyed. His wife and grandmother-to-be Ellie broadcasts it everywhere and all Stan can do is worry about the practical things like how his son-in-law Buckley can afford it. Well, having not long ago paid for the wedding, Stanley has no intention of bearing any of the expenses involved. Buckley’s parents and Ellie are overjoyed at the news and virtually take over redecorating the young couple’s new house. Crisis and false alarms take over their lives and when the child is born, the only person he doesn’t seem to like is Stanley. A walk in the park – and absolute panic when Stanley misplaces his grandson – seems to resolve the situation.
Go for Broke! is a 1951 war film directed by Robert Pirosh and produced by Dore Schary. A tribute to the U.S. 442nd Regimental Combat Team, formed in 1943 by Presidential permission with Japanese-American volunteers. We follow the training of a platoon under the rueful command of Lt. Mike Grayson who shares common prejudices of the time. The 442nd serve in Italy, then France, distinguishing themselves in skirmishes and battles; gradually and naturally, Grayson’s prejudices evaporate with dawning realization that his men are better soldiers than he is. Not preachy.
The film begins on Mother’s Day, 1938 when 14-year-old Ziggy Brennan (Mona Freeman buys a gardenia for her mother. Ziggy’s youthful exuberance disappears when she enters their apartment and finds her mother, Natalie (June Duprez), drinking with a strange man. Natalie introduces Ziggy as her “sister” and quietly cautions Ziggy against calling her “mother.” Later, dispensing some motherly-advice, Natalie tells Ziggy that if she learns all the tricks, she’ll never have to work for a living. Ziggy goes right out and applies parts of this advice by stealing a valuable lapel pin from a fellow high-school student, and is promptly expelled from school. About five years later, Ziggy has made progress and meets Denny Reagan (James Dunn), who persuades her to go into his racket. Ziggy’s role is to telephone people who are planning to move and make arrangements to provide a truck to move the furniture. The departing truck is the last that the owners see of their furniture as it is taken.
On a stormy night, a theatrical producer, his secretary, and playwright Prescott Ames are stranded when their car skids off the road and gets stuck. The three take refuge in the nearby home of Dr. Kent, a friend of Ames. One of Kent’s patients, who is staying at the house, is acting strangely, and the others in the house tell the newcomers that she is behaving this way because it is the anniversary of her husband’s murder. At dinner, the group begins exchanging accusations about the murder, when suddenly the lights go out, and soon afterwards comes the first in a series of mysterious and fearful events.
The war in Europe is over, the Japanese are about to surrender after the Nagasaki bombing, but a group of die-hard German Nazis are holding on in Shanghai, protecting an ingenious invention of mass destruction – a cosmic ray generator that is 1000 times more deadly than the A-bomb. Col. Von Meyer is about to pass the secret of the weapon to Col. Noyoma, as Japan is still at war, and will use it to revenge their recent losses. However, Field Marshal Von Runzel arrives with precise orders to the contrary: the Japanese shall not have the secret weapon, for an underground Nazi ring is to use it later in another attempt to destroy all the Allied Nations, and conquer the world in a third World War. Von Meyer decides to create a diversion, and to offer the Japanese scientist and officers some “evening entertainment” at the German Officers’ Club. A pretty young circus trapeze artist is pushed by her domineering aunt to be the best aerialist in the world. When she begins to fall for one of the two men in her act, her mother determines to break up the romance. So does the other trapeze artist, who is also in love with her.
