Directed by Phil Karlson, The Big Cat is a rugged outdoor adventure drama set during the 1930s Dust Bowl era in rural Utah. It stars Lon McCallister, Peggy Ann Garner, Preston Foster, and Forrest Tucker, and blends coming-of-age themes with frontier hardship and a literal predator stalking the land. The film is notable for its realistic animal sequences and its portrayal of man versus nature.
Plot Summary
Young Danny Turner (Lon McCallister) leaves Depression-era Philadelphia to live with his uncle Gil Hawthorne (Preston Foster) in drought-stricken Utah. Tensions flare between Danny and local bully Tom Eggers (Forrest Tucker), especially when both vie for the attention of Lucy (Peggy Ann Garner).
But the real threat is a cougar—the titular “big cat”—driven into the valley by hunger and drought. As livestock and lives are threatened, Danny must confront both the beast and his own fears. The film builds toward a climactic hunt that tests courage, loyalty, and survival instincts.
