Planet Outlaws is a feature-length re-edit of the 1939 serial Buck Rogers, starring Larry “Buster” Crabbe as the iconic space adventurer. Released in 1953 by K. Gordon Murray, the film was condensed from the original 12-part serial into a 71-minute movie, repackaged for the Cold War era with added narration and a new framing device to emphasize the threat of totalitarianism—mirroring anxieties about the “Red Menace”.
Plot Summary
Buck Rogers and his sidekick Buddy Wade are frozen in a dirigible accident and awaken 500 years in the future, where Earth is ruled by the tyrannical Killer Kane. Buck joins the resistance, led by Dr. Huer, to overthrow Kane and restore freedom to the planet. The film follows Buck’s daring missions, aerial dogfights, and encounters with Kane’s robotic enforcers.
Though the story is episodic and choppy due to its serial origins, it retains the charm of vintage sci-fi with ray guns, rocket ships, and heroic bravado.

Behind-the-Scenes Trivia
- The original Buck Rogers serial ran nearly four hours, meaning Planet Outlaws cuts out over two-thirds of the footage
- The film was re-edited with voice-over narration to help bridge the gaps and modernize the plot for 1950s audiences
- Despite being set in the 25th century, the film’s technology includes no computers, radar, or multi-seat spacecraft—pilots literally look out windows to navigate
- Buck’s military rank is inconsistently referenced—he’s called Lieutenant in the film, though promotional materials list him as Colonel
