The Yellow Rose of Texas (1944)
Directed by Joseph Kane and released in June 1944, The Yellow Rose of Texas is an American singing cowboy Western produced and distributed by Republic Pictures. Starring “King of the Cowboys” Roy Rogers, his trusty horse Trigger, comedian George “Gabby” Hayes, and leading lady Dale Evans, this lively 69-minute musical feature blends frontier justice, undercover riverboat detective work, and iconic Western melodies.
Plot Overview
When an entertainer working on a grand paddlewheel showboat is murdered during a robbery, a priceless oil painting belonging to a museum goes missing. To track down the stolen artwork and bring the killer to justice, stage-and-screen performer Roy Rogers is secretly enlisted by the state governor to go undercover. Posing as an ordinary insurance investigator, Roy boards the riverboat The Yellow Rose of Texas, mingling with performers, deckhands, and high-society passengers while searching for clues.
Along the way, Roy crosses paths with his colorful, cantankerous sidekick Gabby Whitaker (George “Gabby” Hayes), who is inadvertently tangled up in the mystery, and the sharp-witted singer Susan Higgins (Dale Evans). As Roy digs deeper, he discovers that the stolen painting is being used as collateral by a ruthless gang of smugglers hiding out in the rugged Texas hills. Utilizing his trademark horsemanship, quick wits, and musical talents, Roy must navigate a series of ambushes, unravel the smuggling ring, and recover the missing canvas before the outlaws slip across state lines.
