Battle Taxi (1955)
Directed by B-movie craftsman Herbert L. Strock and released in January 1955, Battle Taxi is an American Korean War aviation drama produced by Ivan Tors Productions and distributed through United Artists. Starring rugged leading man Sterling Hayden, Arthur Franz, and Marshall Thompson, this tense 82-minute feature pays tribute to the unsung heroes of the U.S. Air Force Air Rescue Service, showcasing the pioneering military use of helicopters during combat operations.
Plot Overview
During the height of the Korean War, former jet fighter pilot Captain Pete Vincent (Arthur Franz) is involuntarily reassigned to an Air Rescue squadron flying Sikorsky H-19 helicopters. Bitter about being removed from direct combat duty, Vincent views his new assignment as “bus driving” far behind the front lines. He clashes almost immediately with his strict, combat-hardened commanding officer, Commander Russ Adams (Sterling Hayden), who demands absolute discipline and flawless precision from his rescue pilots.
Vincent’s cynical perspective changes drastically once he experiences the extreme danger of helicopter rescue missions firsthand. Flying low over rugged enemy territory without heavy defensive armor, Vincent, Commander Adams, and co-pilot Lieutenant Tim O’Reilly (Marshall Thompson) risk intense ground fire to swoop down and extract downed Allied fighter pilots, wounded infantrymen, and isolated reconnaissance teams. When a critical evacuation mission leaves a pilot stranded deep behind enemy lines, Vincent must push his vulnerable rotorcraft to its physical limits to pull off a heart-pounding rescue under heavy fire.
