Girls in Chains (1943)

Directed by legendary B-movie auteur Edgar G. Ulmer and released on May 17, 1943, Girls in Chains is a gritty American women-in-prison crime melodrama produced by Peter R. Van Duinen and distributed by Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC). Starring Arline Judge, Roger Clark, and Robin Raymond, this fast-moving, 71-minute Poverty Row feature exposes corruption, organized crime, and institutional abuse within a women’s correctional facility.

Plot Overview

After being wrongfully dismissed from her high school teaching position due to a trumped-up scandal orchestrated by local racketeer Johnny Moon (Addison Randall), idealist Helen Martin (Arline Judge) takes a job as a psychologist and teacher at a state women’s reformatory. She quickly discovers that the institution is run not as a place of rehabilitation, but as a brutal, corrupt profit enterprise controlled by the cruel warden, Mrs. Peters (Dorothy Burgess), who is secretly in league with Moon’s gambling syndicate.

Determined to clean up the facility and protect the vulnerable inmates from systemic physical and mental abuse, Helen teams up with crusading political reformer and investigator Frank Donovan (Roger Clark). Posing as an insider to gather evidence, Helen places her life in extreme jeopardy when the corrupt guards and Moon’s henchmen realize she is leaking crucial information. As a dangerous inmate riot looms and the mob moves to silence her permanently, Helen must outsmart the syndicate before she becomes the latest victim of the reformatory’s lethal cover-up.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • Edgar G. Ulmer’s Poverty Row Touch: Director Edgar G. Ulmer—famed for B-movie masterpieces like Detour (1945) and The Black Cat (1934)—brought a remarkably expressive, film noir visual style to PRC despite ultra-low budgets and tight shooting schedules.
  • Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC): Famous as one of the most frugally operated studios on Hollywood’s Poverty Row, PRC specialized in exploitation, crime, and horror programmers designed for double features and neighborhood theaters.
  • Arline Judge’s Lead Role: Former 1930s musical-comedy actress Arline Judge delivers a fiery, grounded dramatic performance as the brave reformer Helen, leading a cast of reliable B-movie character performers.
