Who Killed Doc Robbin? (1948)

Helmed by veteran slapstick director Bernard Carr and produced by comedy legend Hal Roach, Who Killed Doc Robbin? (released in the UK as Sinister House) is an energetic Cinecolor juvenile comedy-mystery. Unspooled on April 9, 1948, via United Artists, this 55-minute “Streamliner” feature serves as a spiritual successor to Roach’s iconic Our Gang (The Little Rascals) franchise, starring child actors Larry Olsen, Eilene Janssen, Gerald Perreau, and Dale Belding, alongside B-movie horror staples George Zucco and Virginia Grey.

Plot Overview

When an explosion rocks the home laboratory of eccentric scientist Doc Robbin (George Zucco), the local authorities presume the doctor perished in the blast and promptly arrest a local teenager, Dan Lawson, charging him with murder. Refusing to believe their friend is guilty, a tight-knit gang of neighborhood kids led by the spunky Curley (Larry Olsen) sets out to investigate the crime scene themselves to prove Dan’s innocence.

Their search leads them to Doc Robbin’s spooky, dilapidated Victorian mansion on the edge of town, complete with secret passages, sliding bookcase doors, hidden traps, and a runaway gorilla roaming the corridors. As the young detectives creep through the shadowy estate in search of clues, they discover that Doc Robbin may not be dead after all—and that a masked figure is operating a covert operation within the house. Using clever traps, slingshots, and chaotic teamwork, Curley and the gang outwit the shadowy villain, unmask the real culprit, and rescue the eccentric doctor before it’s too late.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • The Hal Roach “Streamliner” Formula: In the late 1940s, comedy pioneer Hal Roach pioneered the “Streamliner”—medium-length features clocking in under an hour designed to serve as tight, fast-moving co-features on double-bill theater marquees.
  • The “Hal Roach Comedy Kids” Lineage: Following the sale of the Our Gang name and rights to MGM in 1938, Roach attempted to resurrect the juvenile ensemble formula for the late 1940s. Who Killed Doc Robbin? directly followed Curley (1947), featuring the exact same core cast of child actors.
  • Rich Cinecolor Photography: Produced using the two-color Cinecolor process, the film contrasts brightly saturated, primary-colored costumes worn by the kids against the dark, muted, amber-hued shadows of the haunted mansion set.
  • George Zucco’s Horror Parody: Cult horror icon George Zucco—famous for Universal’s The Mummy’s Hand and PRC Poverty Row chillers like The Mad Monster—delightfully parodies his own mad-scientist persona, bringing seasoned theatrical flair to the juvenile spooky comedy.
