Fire Maidens of Outer Space (1956)
Written, produced, and directed by Cy Roth and released in 1956, Fire Maidens of Outer Space (sometimes known as Fire Maidens from Outer Space) is an ultra-low-budget British-American science fiction B-movie distributed by Criterion Films and Filmakers Releasing Organization. Starring Hollywood actor Anthony Dexter, Susan Shaw, Paul Carpenter, and Harry Fowler, this eccentric 73-minute space-exploration feature blends mid-century rocket culture with classic pulp tropes of lost civilizations, alien monsters, and captive women.
Plot Overview
Astronomers on Earth detect a mysterious terrestrial fog surrounding the thirteenth moon of Jupiter (or Saturn, depending on the mission logs), prompting international authorities to dispatch a joint Anglo-American expedition. Commanded by astronaut Luther Blair (Anthony Dexter) alongside Captain Larson (Paul Carpenter) and a small team of scientists, the crew successfully navigates their rocket through deep space and lands on the uncharted, fog-shrouded satellite.
Upon exploring the rocky surface, the astronauts rescue a stunning, distressed woman named Hestia (Susan Shaw) from the clutches of a terrifying, cave-dwelling creature—a dark-skinned, beast-like humanoid. Hestia leads the men back to New Atlantis, a hidden subterranean city that serves as the last dying remnant of the original sunken continent of Atlantis. There, they discover a society consisting entirely of women—dubbed the “Fire Maidens”—ruled over by a lone aging patriarch named Prasus (Owen Berry). While Prasus hopes the arrival of strong Earthmen will help them destroy the local monster and assist in populating their dwindling civilization, political tensions, jealousy, and romantic intrigues immediately spark among the inhabitants, leading to a fateful showdown with the beast.

Production Notes & Trivia
- Stock Footage Economy: Typical of ultra-low-budget 1950s sci-fi, the film’s rocket launch sequences utilized genuine stock footage of a captured German V-2 rocket test conducted at the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico during the late 1940s.
- The “Fire Maiden” Ensemble: Alongside leading lady Susan Shaw, the production cast over a dozen British glamour models and actresses to fill out the ranks of the Atlantean women, earning the film a cult following among fans of retro B-movie camp.
- Cult Satellite Fame: Decades after its theatrical run, the film found a thriving second life when it was featured on the classic comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Season 4, Episode 16), immortalizing lines like “Prasus, he promised us husbands!”
