Esther and the King (1960)

Co-written, produced, and directed by B-movie royalty Raoul Walsh alongside co-director Mario Bava (uncredited), Esther and the King is an international biblical sword-and-sandal epic. Distributed by 20th Century Fox and filmed on sprawling Italian locations in vivid DeLuxe Color and CinemaScope, this 109-minute widescreen spectacle stars Joan Collins, Richard Egan, Denis O’Dea, and Sergio Fantoni, blending Old Testament lore with the visceral energy of mid-century Italian peplum cinema.

Plot Overview

Set in 5th-century BCE Persia, King Ahasuerus (Richard Egan) returns home from distant military campaigns only to find his court steeped in betrayal. Disillusioned after banishing his treacherous queen, Vashti, the monarch decrees that the most beautiful maidens across the empire be brought to his palace so he may select a new bride. Among them is Esther (Joan Collins), a compassionate and intelligent Jewish woman betrothed to a young officer named Simon.

Despite the political turmoil surrounding the throne, Ahasuerus is captivated by Esther’s poise and moral strength, selecting her to be his queen. As Esther navigates the dangerous intrigue of the Persian court, the King’s corrupt minister, Haman (Sergio Fantoni), secretly plots a massive genocidal campaign to eradicate the Jewish population across the kingdom. Supported by her wise foster father Mordecai (Denis O’Dea), Esther risks her own life by stepping outside royal protocol, exposing Haman’s treason, and appealing directly to her husband’s sense of justice to save her people.

Behind the Scenes & Trivia

  • Raoul Walsh Meets Peplum: Renowned Hollywood veteran Raoul Walsh (The Roaring Twenties, White Heat) brought classic studio-system efficiency to Italy, infusing traditional biblical storytelling with gritty action sequences and melodrama.
  • The Mario Bava Connection: Italian horror and visual effects pioneer Mario Bava served as the film’s cinematographer and second-unit director. His signature stylistic flourishes—vibrant color palettes, dramatic shadow plays, and inventive matte paintings—are stamped throughout the film’s lavish palace sets.
  • Peak Joan Collins Glamour: Prior to her iconic television stardom in the 1980s (Dynasty), Joan Collins made a major mark in mid-century Hollywood epics, delivering a passionate, commanding lead performance as the titular heroine.
