Prehistoric Women (1950)

Helmed by director and co-writer Gregg G. Tallas and released in 1950 (initially under the working title The Virgin Goddess), Prehistoric Women stands as a wonderfully bizarre independent Stone Age fantasy adventure. Produced by Alliance Productions and distributed via Cinecolor process, this 74-minute camp classic stars Laurette Luez, Allan Nixon, Joan Shawlee, and Mara Lynn, offering an eccentric twist on early prehistoric cinema tropes through a matriarchal lens.

Plot Overview

Deep in the untamed wilderness of prehistory, a militant tribe of Amazonian cavewomen led by the fierce, man-hating Tigri (Laurette Luez) rules the local terrain. Holding a deep-seated contempt for men, Tigri and her followers view males strictly as a necessary evil for the survival of their society, regularly hunting down and capturing wandering men to serve as captive husbands in their hidden encampment.

When a bold and resourceful hunter named Engor (Allan Nixon) sets out to rescue his captured comrades, he stumbles across a revolutionary discovery: fire. Armed with this blazing new weapon and his own sharp wits, Engor manages to navigate deadly jungle predators, outsmart the Amazonian guards, and eventually use the terrifying power of flame to repel a monstrous, dragon-like beast threatening the tribe. Stunned by his bravery and dominance, Tigri and her followers find their matriarchal order upended, leading to a fateful alliance and a primitive wedding that lays the groundwork for a newly civilized tribe.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • The Cinecolor Aesthetic: Shot on a modest independent budget, the film utilized the two-color Cinecolor process, giving its jungle landscapes, amber campfires, and animal hides a distinctively vibrant, painterly pastel palette characteristic of 1950s independent exploitation.
  • Echoes of Earlier Epics: The production deliberately drew inspiration from Hal Roach’s landmark silent-era caveman spectacle One Million B.C. (1940), though it inverted the power dynamics by placing women firmly at the head of tribal civilization.
