The Three Weird Sisters (1948)

Directed by Daniel Birt and released in February 1948, The Three Weird Sisters is a dark, atmospheric British Gothic melodrama produced by British National Films and distributed by Associated British Pathé. Clocking in at 82 minutes, this Welsh-set suspense programmer features screen legends Nancy Price, Mary Clare, and Mary Merrall as the titular trio, bolstered by an early performance by Nova Pilbeam and screenplays co-crafted by literary giant Dylan Thomas.

Plot Overview

In a decaying, flood-threatened mansion in South Wales live the Morgan sisters—Maude (Nancy Price), Maartje (Mary Clare), and Isobel (Mary Merrall)—three eccentric, aging spinsters bound together by dark family history and a fanatical devotion to their local mining village. When a collapse in the abandoned subterranean mines threatens to swallow the town whole, the sisters desperately need funds to repair the land and protect their impoverished community.

They summon their wealthy half-brother, Owen Morgan (Raymond Lovell), who resides in London, hoping he will finance the restoration. Owen arrives accompanied by his youthful, unsympathetic secretary and fiancée, Claire (Nova Pilbeam). When Owen cold-heartedly refuses to hand over his fortune, the sisters—drawing on a sinister collective resolve reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Macbeth warlocks—quietly plot to murder their half-brother. As Claire uncovers subtle traps and mysterious “accidents” engineered within the sprawling, creaking manor, she realizes they must escape before the sisters claim Owen’s fortune in the name of their twisted sense of duty.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • Iconic Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas co-adapted the screenplay alongside producer Louise Birt from Charlotte Armstrong’s 1943 suspense novel The Case of the Weird Sisters, infusing the dialogue with a distinct, brooding poetic macabre.
  • Produced at National Studios in Elstree by British National Films, the feature exemplifies the studio’s mid-to-late-1940s focus on dark regional melodramas, employing deep shadow photography and claustrophobic set design.
  • Famous for her celebrated starring turns in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and Young and Innocent (1937), actress Nova Pilbeam makes her final feature film appearance here before retiring permanently from acting at age 29.
