The Man from Toronto (1933)

Directed by Sinclair Hill and released on January 1933, The Man from Toronto is an elegant, early sound British romantic comedy produced by Gainsborough Pictures and distributed by Ideal Films (a subsidiary of Gaumont-British). Running a breezy 68 minutes, this high-society programmer stars international stage and screen diva Jessie Matthews alongside Ian Hunter, Fred Groves, and Kathleen Harrison, standing as a foundational cornerstone in Gainsborough’s legendary run of 1930s musical-comedies.

Plot Overview

When a wealthy, eccentric uncle passes away, he leaves a lucrative inheritance worth nearly a quarter-million pounds to two distant relatives—with one strict, bizarre proviso attached: English country beauty Leslie Farrar (Jessie Matthews) must marry her rustic Canadian cousin, Fergus Wimbush (Ian Hunter), whom she has never met. If either party refuses the union within one month, the entire fortune is forfeited to charity.

Indignant at having her personal life manipulated from beyond the grave, Leslie hatches a clever scheme to test Fergus’s true character before revealing her identity. When Fergus arrives in England from Toronto to inspect his prospective bride, Leslie secretly disguises herself as her own humble housemaid, “Polly.” As Fergus moves into the country estate, he rapidly falls madly in love with the witty, charming maid Polly, completely ignoring his upper-class, aristocratic duties. Complications snowball as Leslie finds herself caught in her own trap, trying to force Fergus to declare his love for “Polly” while desperately trying to keep the estate’s gossip-prone servants from blowing her cover.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • The Man from Toronto served as the crucial vehicle that catapulted stage performer Jessie Matthews into international cinema stardom. Her radiant screen charm in this picture prompted Gainsborough Pictures to sign her to a long-term contract, paving the way for her iconic musical classics like Evergreen (1934) and First a Girl (1935).
  • Adapted from Douglas Murray’s popular 1918 West End stage play of the same name, screenwriters Ian Hay and R.P. Weston modernized the dialogue to fit early 1930s sensibilities while enhancing the fast-paced screwball banter.
  • Produced at the famed Lime Grove Studios in Shepherd’s Bush, London, director Sinclair Hill utilized crisp art-deco set design and fluid camera movement, demonstrating Gainsborough’s ability to rival Hollywood’s polished studio aesthetic.
