Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer, A Scream in the Night is a compact, atmospheric crime mystery set in an unnamed Eastern seaport, blending exotic intrigue with classic pulp storytelling. Though produced in 1934, the film struggled to find distribution and was only released theatrically in 1943, after its star Lon Chaney Jr. had risen to fame.
Plot Summary
Jack Wilson (Lon Chaney Jr.), a colonial police detective, is on the hunt for a stolen gem and a notorious jewel thief named Johnny Fly (Manuel López). To infiltrate the criminal underworld, Wilson assumes the identity of Butch Curtain, a drunken, low-life bar owner who looks exactly like him. This dual-role performance allows Chaney to showcase both grit and sleaze as he navigates a world of smugglers, gangsters, and double-crosses.
The film builds tension as Wilson, disguised as Butch, uncovers layers of deception and danger, culminating in a confrontation that tests his resolve and cunning.
