She Gods of Shark Reef (1958)

Directed by Roger Corman, She Gods of Shark Reef is a low-budget adventure film that blends island exoticism, crime drama, and a splash of pseudo-mythology. Shot in Hawaii and released by American International Pictures, it’s a classic example of 1950s exploitation cinema—complete with shirtless hunks, mysterious women, and a shark-worshipping cult.

Plot Summary
Two brothers—Chris (Bill Cord), a decent man, and Lee (Don Durant), a fugitive wanted for murder—are shipwrecked on a remote island inhabited by beautiful women who dive for pearls and worship the shark god Tangaroa. As Chris falls for Mahia (Lisa Montell), tensions rise between the brothers and the island’s matriarch Queen Pua (Jeanne Gerson), who enforces strict taboos and prepares human sacrifices to appease the angry shark deity.

Cast Highlights

  • Bill Cord as Christy “Chris” Johnston
  • Don Durant as Lee Johnston
  • Lisa Montell as Mahia
  • Jeanne Gerson as Queen Pua
  • Carol Lindsay, Ed Nelson, and Beverly Rivera in supporting roles

Behind-the-Scenes Trivia

  • Corman shot the film on the same Hawaiian location as Naked Paradise (1957), maximizing budget efficiency
  • The original title was simply “Shark Reef”, but AIP added “She Gods” for marketing flair—even though no one knew who the “She Gods” were
  • The film was shelved for over a year before being released as part of a double feature with Night of the Blood Beast (1958)
  • Lovers of “beefcake” will note that Cord and Durant remain bare-chested for nearly the entire runtime
  • A reference to the film appears in Dinocroc vs. Supergator (2010), another Corman production
