Directed by Joseph Kane and produced by Republic Pictures, Silver Spurs is a lively Western mystery starring Roy Rogers, Smiley Burnette, and John Carradine. While it features the usual cowboy action and musical interludes, the plot is unusually twisty and suspenseful, more akin to a murder mystery than a standard shoot-’em-up.
Plot Summary
Roy Rogers plays the foreman of a sprawling ranch owned by playboy Jerry Johnson (Jerome Cowan), who inherited the land under a will that forbids him from selling it—unless he dies, in which case his widow can. Enter Lucky Miller (John Carradine), a scheming gambler who wants the land for a railroad deal. He arranges for a woman to marry Jerry, then has him murdered, framing Roy by planting his gun as the murder weapon.
Meanwhile, Phyllis Brooks plays a sharp reporter who suspects foul play and marries Jerry herself to get the inside scoop. With help from sidekick Smiley Burnette (as Frog Millhouse), Roy must clear his name, expose the killer, and save the ranch.
