Sunset Murder Case (1938)

Directed by Louis J. Gasnier, Sunset Murder Case is a pulpy, low-budget crime melodrama that blends murder mystery, nightclub sleaze, and a dash of burlesque glamour. The film stars Sally Rand, famed for her provocative fan and bubble dances, in what would be her final film role.

Plot Summary
When her police detective father is murdered to cover up another crime, Kathy O’Connor (Sally Rand) goes undercover as a nightclub dancer to infiltrate the criminal underworld and expose the killer. Posing as a stripper named “Valerie,” she navigates a world of shady club owners, jealous rivals, and corrupt officials—all while performing her signature bubble dance in a Grecian toga.

Though the mystery is thinly veiled (you know who the villain is early on), the film thrives on its campy atmosphere, snappy one-liners, and Rand’s stage presence.

Cast Highlights

  • Sally Rand as Kathy O’Connor / Valerie
  • Henry King as the romantic lead
  • Esther Muir, Lona Andre, and Vince Barnett in supporting roles
  • Marpessa Dawn appears in a rare early role

Behind-the-Scenes Trivia

  • Originally titled The Sunset Strip Murder Case, the film’s release was delayed three years due to the collapse of Grand National Pictures
  • Sally Rand filmed a PG-13 version of her famous bubble dance—no nudity, but plenty of suggestive flair
  • The film’s sound and editing are notoriously poor, with some scenes appearing to be shot in Hollywood and dubbed in Cleveland
  • The term “ecdysiast” (a polite word for stripper) was coined by H.L. Mencken at the request of Gypsy Rose Lee, not Rand—but it’s often misattributed
