The Gun Runners (1958)

Directed by Don Siegel, The Gun Runners is a taut crime thriller that reinterprets Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel To Have and Have Not for a Cold War audience. This 1958 adaptation stars Audie Murphy, the decorated WWII hero turned actor, in a rare non-Western role that adds layers of tension and moral ambiguity to the story of a desperate man caught in a dangerous game.

Plot Overview
Murphy plays Sam Martin, a charter boat captain in the Florida Keys struggling to keep his business afloat. Pressured by debt and a failing economy, Sam is lured into smuggling guns to Cuba by the smooth-talking and ruthless Hanagan (played by Eddie Albert). As Sam becomes entangled in the murky world of arms dealing, he must navigate betrayal, violence, and the threat of losing everything—including his wife, Lucy (Patricia Owens).

Cast Highlights

  • Audie Murphy as Sam Martin
  • Eddie Albert as Hanagan
  • Patricia Owens as Lucy Martin
  • Gita Hall as Eva (her film debut)
  • Everett Sloane, Richard Jaeckel, Jack Elam, and Paul Birch round out a strong supporting cast

Behind-the-Scenes Trivia

  • Director Don Siegel was reportedly unhappy with Murphy as the lead, citing his extreme shyness during rehearsals
  • Despite his reserved nature, Murphy was known to carry a gun even off-set, including to restaurants with Siegel—just in case
  • This was the first feature film from Seven Arts Productions, which would later acquire Warner Bros. in 1967
  • The film was shot on location in Newport Beach, California, though it’s set in the Florida Keys

Adaptation Notes

  • The Gun Runners is the third film version of Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not, following the 1944 Bogart-Bacall classic and 1950’s The Breaking Point with John Garfield
  • Unlike its predecessors, this version is set during the Cuban Revolution, adding a layer of geopolitical tension
  • The film avoids taking a political stance, focusing instead on Sam’s personal moral crisis
