Directed by Lesley Selander and released by Republic Pictures, The Vampire’s Ghost is a moody, low-budget horror film that blends supernatural suspense with exotic colonial settings. With a script co-written by Leigh Brackett—who would later co-write The Empire Strikes Back—the film offers a surprisingly intelligent take on vampire mythology for its time.
Plot Summary
Set in the fictional African port of Bakunda, the story centers on Webb Fallon (John Abbott), a mysterious bar owner with a dark secret: he’s a centuries-old vampire. As a series of unexplained deaths and disappearances plague the town, Fallon’s eerie demeanor and hypnotic stare begin to draw suspicion.
Local missionary Father Gilchrist and young lovers Roy Hendrick (Charles Gordon) and Julie Vance (Peggy Stewart) investigate the strange happenings. As Fallon grows weary of his immortal existence, he seeks a companion for his eternal journey—fixating on Julie. The climax unfolds in the jungle, where the vampire’s fate is sealed in a fiery confrontation.
