Directed by Norman Foster and starring Ann Sheridan, Woman on the Run is a lean, suspenseful film noir that blends marital drama with a murder mystery, all set against the foggy backdrop of postwar San Francisco. With its brisk pacing and emotionally layered performances, it’s become a rediscovered gem of the genre.
Plot Summary
When Frank Johnson witnesses a gangland murder, he flees before police can question him—knowing the killer saw him too. His estranged wife, Eleanor Johnson (Ann Sheridan), is reluctantly drawn into the manhunt. As she navigates the city’s underbelly, Eleanor begins to uncover truths about her husband—and herself—that she hadn’t faced during their troubled marriage.
With the help of a persistent reporter (Dennis O’Keefe), Eleanor races against time to find Frank before the killer does. The film builds to a tense climax at an amusement park, where shadows, screams, and a roller coaster ride deliver noir thrills.

- Much of it was shot on location in San Francisco, capturing the city’s gritty charm before its postwar transformation
- A fire in 2008 destroyed the only known print, but Eddie Muller of TCM’s Noir Alley tracked down a surviving 35mm copy at the British Film Institute, leading to a full restoration by UCLA Film & Television Archive
- The amusement park scenes were filmed at Ocean Park Pier in Santa Monica, not San Francisco
- Sheridan and O’Keefe reportedly wrote much of their own dialogue, adding naturalism to their performances
