Crimson Romance (1934)

Directed by David Howard, Crimson Romance is a compact, emotionally charged war drama set during the early days of World War I. With a cast led by Ben Lyon, Sari Maritza, and Erich von Stroheim, the film explores themes of loyalty, nationalism, and romantic rivalry—all played out in the skies above Europe.

Plot Summary
Fred von Bergen (James Bush), a German immigrant in America, is fired from his job as a test pilot due to rising anti-German sentiment. His best friend Bob Wilson (Ben Lyon) quits in solidarity, and the two head to Germany, where they join the German air force—despite Bob’s American roots.

Complications arise when both men fall for Alida Hoffman (Sari Maritza), a Red Cross nurse. As the war intensifies and America enters the conflict, Bob’s loyalties are tested. When he’s accused of cowardice and faces execution, Fred must choose between duty to his country and loyalty to his friend.
