Plot Overview
In 14th-century BC Thebes, an abandoned baby found floating in a reed boat grows up to become Sinuhe (Edmund Purdom), a compassionate physician serving the poor alongside his cunning, one-eyed servant Kaptah (Peter Ustinov). Sinuhe’s life changes forever when he and his ambitious military friend Horemheb (Victor Mature) rescue the young heir to the throne, Akhenaten (Michael Wilding), during a royal lion hunt. In gratitude, Akhenaten appoints Sinuhe as court physician and elevates Horemheb to the royal guard.
Sinuhe’s sudden fortune is short-lived. He falls under the spell of Nefer (Bella Darvi), a ruthless Babylonian courtesan who seduces him into surrendering his wealth, his house, and even his deceased parents’ sacred tomb. Broken and ruined, Sinuhe flees Egypt, wandering through foreign lands as an exiled battlefield surgeon. Upon his return years later, he discovers his homeland plunged into chaos: Pharaoh Akhenaten has outlawed the ancient gods to enforce monotheistic worship of the sun god Aten, sparking a bloody civil war led by the traditional priesthood. Forced to choose between his loyalties to a visionary ruler, his affectionate bond with the devotion-driven Merit (Jean Simmons), and Horemheb’s ruthless ambition to claim the pharaoh’s throne, Sinuhe must navigate a deadly maze of court intrigue.

Production Notes & Trivia
- Brando’s Famous Walkout: Marlon Brando was originally cast as Sinuhe and had even completed wardrobe tests. Just days before filming began, Brando abruptly quit the production, claiming dissatisfaction with the script and director—forcing 20th Century Fox to quickly borrow contract star Edmund Purdom from MGM.
- A Titanic Musical Score: The Egyptian features a historic collaboration between two legendary film composers: Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann. Working under a tight production deadline, the pair divided the scenes between them, blending their styles into a towering orchestral score.
