Bridal Suite (1939)

Directed by Wilhelm Thiele and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Bridal Suite is a light-hearted romantic comedy set in the scenic Swiss Alps. With a cast led by Annabella and Robert Young, the film follows a spoiled American playboy whose impulsive charm collides with a grounded innkeeper’s values—leading to a whirlwind of love, deception, and unexpected maturity.

Plot Summary
Neil McGill (Robert Young), a wealthy and carefree American, is engaged to Abbie Bragdon (Virginia Field) but finds himself drawn to Luise Anzengruber (Annabella), a modest innkeeper at a Swiss chalet. After a series of flirtations and misadventures—including a mountain hike gone wrong and a surprise avalanche—Neil begins to fall genuinely in love with Luise.

But when his mother plans a shipboard wedding to Abbie, Luise discovers the deception and leaves. Neil confesses his true feelings, and after a chaotic chase and a few punches thrown, he ends up married to Luise. In a final twist, Luise convinces Neil’s father to give him a job as a shipping clerk—signaling Neil’s transformation from playboy to responsible husband.
