Gang Busters (1955)
Directed by Bill Karn and released in March 1955, Gang Busters is an American procedural crime film noir produced by William F. Broidy and distributed by Visual Drama Inc. (and later Allied Artists). Starring Myron Healey, Don C. Harvey, Sam Edwards, and Frank Gerstle, this hard-hitting 78-minute feature brings the gritty, docudrama police-procedural style of Phillips H. Lord’s famous radio and television franchise directly to the big screen.
Plot Overview
Based on the real-life crime spree of notorious outlaw John “The Eyeglasses” Omar (Myron Healey) and his ruthless gang, the film follows their daring escape from a maximum-security prison. Led by the highly intelligent but sociopathic Omar, the gang launches a terrifying wave of bank robberies, jewel heists, and violent shootouts across the Midwest, staying one step ahead of state and federal authorities through meticulously calculated planning and ruthless brute force.
Tasked with bringing down the syndicate is relentless police detective Lieutenant Mark Brennan (Don C. Harvey) and his investigative team. Utilizing authentic police techniques, ballistics tracking, and extensive underworld informant networks, the investigators slowly close in on the gang’s hideout. As tensions within the gang boil over and Omar grows increasingly erratic, the law enforcement dragnet tightens, culminating in a tense, explosive standoff between the authorities and the desperate fugitives.

Production Notes & Trivia
- Radio to Screen Franchise: Gang Busters originated in 1936 as a legendary radio series created by Phillips H. Lord, famous for its iconic opening sound effects of police sirens, marching boots, and machine guns—which gave rise to the popular American slang idiom “comin’ in like Gang Busters.”
- Television Crossover: The 1955 feature film was cleverly constructed by combining three re-edited, contiguous episodes from the short-lived 1952 Gang Busters television series, updated with additional cinematic framing and voiceover narration from Phillips H. Lord.
- Myron Healey’s Lead Role: Famed character actor Myron Healey, best known for playing cold-blooded heavies and villains across hundreds of 1950s Westerns and B-crime movies, delivers one of his rare, commanding lead performances as the sociopathic gang leader Omar.
