Ladies in Retirement (1941)

Directed by Charles Vidor and based on the 1939 stage play by Reginald Denham and Edward Percy, Ladies in Retirement is a haunting psychological thriller that blends film noir atmosphere with Victorian Gothic sensibilities. Released by Columbia Pictures, it stars Ida Lupino in one of her most chilling early performances, alongside Louis Hayward, Evelyn Keyes, and Isobel Elsom.

Plot Summary
Set in a fog-drenched cottage on the English moors, the film follows Ellen Creed (Ida Lupino), a proud but impoverished spinster who works as a companion to retired stage actress Leonora Fiske (Isobel Elsom). When Ellen’s eccentric sisters—Louisa and Emily—are threatened with institutionalization, she convinces Leonora to let them stay. But their disruptive behavior soon tests Leonora’s patience.

Faced with the prospect of losing her sisters to an asylum, Ellen commits murder, strangling Leonora and fabricating a story about her departure. As Ellen tries to maintain the illusion, her nephew Albert Feather (Louis Hayward), a charming thief, arrives and begins to unravel the truth, aided by Leonora’s maid Lucy (Evelyn Keyes).
