Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1943)

Directed by Roy William Neill and released on December 25, 1942 (nationwide rollout in January 1943), Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon is an American wartime detective spy thriller produced and distributed by Universal Pictures. Starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. John H. Watson, this fast-moving 68-minute feature represents the fourth installment in Universal’s iconic 12-film series, pitting Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective against Nazi agents and his arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty.

Plot Overview

During the dark days of World War II, Swiss scientist Dr. Franz Tobel (William Post Jr.) invents a revolutionary bomb sight that promises to give the Royal Air Force unprecedented bombing accuracy over Nazi-occupied Europe. Smuggled out of Switzerland into London by Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) in disguise, Tobel agrees to supply the British military with the device. However, fearing his invention could be captured, Tobel divides the master schematics into four separate coded sections, distributing each piece to four distinct Swiss woodcutters living across London.

When Tobel is abducted by agents working for Holmes’ criminal arch-rival, Professor Moriarty (Lionel Atwill)—who plans to sell the bomb sight to Nazi Germany—Holmes and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) launch a race against time across the fog-shrouded streets of wartime London. Decoding a mysterious dancing-men cipher left behind by the woodcutters, Holmes must outwit Moriarty’s henchmen, dodge lethal traps, and rescue Dr. Tobel before the secret weapon falls into enemy hands.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • Inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: While updated to a modern WWII setting, the film’s plot is loosely adapted from Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic 1903 Sherlock Holmes short story, “The Adventure of the Dancing Men,” utilizing the famous stick-figure substitution cipher.
  • Lionel Atwill’s Moriarty: Acclaimed horror icon Lionel Atwill steps into the role of Professor Moriarty, delivering a suave, sinister performance that stands as one of the definitive cinematic portrayals of Holmes’ ultimate nemesis.
  • Director Roy William Neill: This marked the first of eleven consecutive Sherlock Holmes films directed by Roy William Neill, whose atmospheric lighting, rapid pacing, and dense shadow work became the signature hallmark of the Universal Holmes series.
  • Wartime Propaganda Touch: The film concludes with Basil Rathbone delivering a patriotic, inspiring monologue quoting William Shakespeare’s Richard II (“This royal throne of kings, this scepter’d isle…”), a motivational staple of Universal’s wartime Holmes adventures.
