Directed by Robert N. Bradbury, The Trail Beyond is a brisk, 55-minute Western adventure starring a young John Wayne, flanked by Noah Beery Sr. and Noah Beery Jr.. Released by Monogram Pictures, the film stands out among Wayne’s early Poverty Row features for its lush location shooting and unusually layered plot, adapted from James Oliver Curwood’s novel The Wolf Hunters.
Plot Summary
Wayne plays Rod Drew, a man on a mission to find a missing girl and her father in the Canadian wilderness. Teaming up with his old friend Wabi, Drew uncovers a map to a hidden gold mine and stumbles into a web of deceit involving murder, kidnapping, and a gang of outlaws led by the sinister LaRoque. Along the way, Drew discovers that the girl he’s searching for—Felice Newsome—may be closer than he thinks.

- Actress Verna Hillie was challenged to a drinking contest on location by co-star Noah Beery Sr., a moment of levity behind the scenes
- Some VHS and DVD releases mistakenly used promotional stills from The Lucky Texan, another Wayne film, due to sloppy marketing practices
