Directed by André de Toth, The Two-Headed Spy is a taut British spy thriller set during World War II, starring Jack Hawkins as a high-ranking Nazi officer who is secretly a long-embedded British agent. With noir undertones and a morally complex narrative, the film explores the psychological toll of espionage and the razor’s edge between loyalty and betrayal.
Plot Summary
Colonel Alex Schottland (Jack Hawkins) has spent decades undercover in the German military, rising to a position of influence. As the war intensifies, he passes critical intelligence to the Allies—including warnings about the impending invasion of the Soviet Union. But his cover begins to unravel when Captain Reinisch, a suspicious Gestapo aide, starts digging into Schottland’s past.
To maintain his cover, Schottland must denounce fellow officers as “defeatists,” endure brutal interrogations, and even feign a romantic affair with Lili Geyr (Gia Scala), a singer and fellow British agent. The film builds toward a tense climax as Schottland attempts to relay vital information about the Battle of the Bulge, knowing that exposure could mean death.
