Below the Deadline (1936)

Directed by Charles Lamont and released on June 6, 1936, Below the Deadline is an American crime drama produced and distributed by Chesterfield Pictures. Starring Cecilia Parker, Russell Hopton, and Theodore von Eltz, this brisk 64-minute Poverty Row programmer is a pulpy tale of high-stakes diamond heists, radical physical transformations, and a disgraced cop’s desperate quest for revenge.

Plot Overview

In the lucrative Manhattan jewelry district, a good-natured Irish beat cop named Terry Mulvaney (Russell Hopton) is happily dating Molly Fitzgerald (Cecilia Parker), a young woman working at Abrams and Co. Jewelers. Their peaceful lives are shattered when a ruthless gang leader named Flash Ackroyd (Theodore von Eltz) orchestrates a massive diamond heist at the store. During the robbery, an assistant is murdered, and Flash masterfully frames Terry for both the theft and the killing. Molly is promptly fired from her job due to her association with him, and Terry is forced to go on the run to avoid a certain death sentence.

While fleeing town, Terry is caught in a horrific train wreck and presumed dead by the authorities. However, he survives the crash with severe facial injuries. He undergoes extensive plastic surgery and emerges from the hospital with a completely unrecognizable face. Seizing this second chance, he returns to New York City under a new identity, determined to infiltrate the underworld, clear his name, and bring Flash Ackroyd to justice. His mission becomes emotionally complicated when he crosses paths with Molly again—who is now working in a gangster-run nightclub—forcing him to romance his own grieving girlfriend who has no idea she is speaking to the man she thought was dead.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • Chesterfield Pictures was a classic 1920s and 1930s Poverty Row studio known for producing low-budget melodramas and mysteries. Shortly after the release of this film, Chesterfield was one of several minor independent studios absorbed to form the legendary Republic Pictures.
  • The film’s title refers to a specific piece of police jargon of the era: “The Deadline” was the boundary line of Manhattan’s Canal Street, below which lay the immensely wealthy financial and diamond districts.
  • Director Charles Lamont would later transition away from gritty crime dramas to become one of Universal Pictures’ most reliable comedy directors, famously helming many of the most beloved Abbott and Costello films (such as Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy) and the Francis the Talking Mule series.
  • Leading lady Cecilia Parker was actually on loan from major Hollywood powerhouse MGM to star in this independent production
