The Voice of the City (1929)

Directed by, written by, and starring stage and screen veteran Willard Mack, The Voice of the City is an early American all-talking crime drama produced and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). Released on April 13, 1929, this 80-minute early sound feature stars Willard Mack, Robert Ames, Sylvia Field, and John Miljan. Emerging during Hollywood’s chaotic transition from silent film to “talkies,” it delivers a gritty, atmospheric story of framed fugitives, street-smart detectives, and underworld redemption across Manhattan.

Plot Overview

Young, naive Bobby (Robert Ames) finds his life shattered when he is framed for a brutal gangland murder committed by ruthless mobster Doin (John Miljan). Sentenced to twenty years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Bobby’s thoughts remain fixed on his sweet, faithful girlfriend, Sunshine (Sylvia Field). Unwilling to spend his youth behind bars for another man’s treason, Bobby pulls off a daring prison escape and slips back into the shadowed alleyways of New York City to reunite with her.

An escaped convict in the big city immediately draws heavy heat, and veteran police detective Biff O’Brien (Willard Mack) is assigned to track Bobby down. O’Brien is a streetwise beat cop with a sharp mind and a compassionate heart. As he closes the net on the runaway couple, O’Brien begins to suspect that Bobby was set up. Touched by Sunshine’s fierce loyalty and convinced of Bobby’s innocence, the veteran detective decides to bend the rules: instead of dragging Bobby back to prison, O’Brien hatches a clever, high-stakes trap to trick the real killers into confessing and clear Bobby’s name once and for all.

Production Notes & Trivia

  • A Multitalented Auteur: Willard Mack was a true multi-hyphenate of early Hollywood. Beyond writing, directing, and starring in The Voice of the City, he served as one of MGM’s principal dialogue coaches during the early sound era, helping Broadway actors adapt to camera acting.
  • Early MGM Sound Pioneer: Released in the spring of 1929, the picture stands as one of MGM’s earliest fully talking crime melodramas, employing early Western Electric sound equipment to capture urban street slang and ambient sound effects.
  • A Familiar TV Face: Leading lady Sylvia Field enjoyed a distinguished career across stage, film, and television, but she is best remembered by classic TV fans as Martha Wilson (Dennis’s patient neighbor) on Dennis the Menace (1959–1962).
  • Pre-Code Sympathy: Filmed years before the strict enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code in 1934, the movie treats an escaped convict with genuine empathy and presents law enforcement as pragmatic and humane rather than rigidly authoritarian.

Legacy

The Voice of the City holds historical value as a stepping stone in the evolution of American crime cinema. While its visual staging reflects the microphone-restricted limitations of 1929 recording equipment, Willard Mack’s warm, grounded performance and naturalistic dialogue lend the picture an enduring charm. It bridges the gap between 1920s silent melodramas and the hard-boiled 1930s urban gangster pictures that soon followed.
