The Red House (1947)

Directed by Delmer Daves, The Red House is a haunting blend of psychological thriller, film noir, and rural gothic. Starring Edward G. Robinson, Judith Anderson, Lon McCallister, and Allene Roberts, the film explores buried trauma, forbidden places, and the unraveling of a dark family mystery. Based on the 1945 novel by George Agnew Chamberlain, it was released by United Artists and has since become a cult favorite for its eerie tone and genre-defying style.

Plot Summary
On a secluded farm, Pete Morgan (Edward G. Robinson), a reclusive and disabled farmer, lives with his sister Ellen (Judith Anderson) and their adopted daughter Meg (Allene Roberts). When Meg convinces her classmate Nath Storm (Lon McCallister) to help with chores, Pete warns him to avoid the nearby woods, claiming they hide a dangerous place: a mysterious red house.

Curiosity gets the better of Nath and Meg, who begin exploring the forest and uncover disturbing truths about Pete’s past—including a long-buried crime and a secret that threatens to destroy their lives. As tensions rise, the red house becomes a symbol of guilt, obsession, and the psychological scars that never fade.
