Directed by visionary master of horror Mario Bava and released in Italy on November 16, 1961 (also known internationally as Hercules in the Haunted World), Hercules in the Center of the Earth is an Italian peplum fantasy horror film produced by SpA Cinematografica. Starring British bodybuilder Reg Park in his iconic role as the mythical hero, alongside horror icon Christopher Lee as his villainous nemesis, the film is widely regarded as one of the most visually stunning and atmospheric entries in the 1960s sword-and-sandal genre.
Plot Overview
Upon returning home from his latest trials, the legendary demigod Hercules (Reg Park) discovers that his beloved bride, Princess Deianira (Leonora Ruffo), has suddenly fallen into a catatonic, seemingly incurable trance. Seeking guidance, Hercules consults the masked oracle Medea, who reveals that Deianira’s soul can only be saved by the magical Stone of Forgetfulness, located deep in the perilous, supernatural depths of Hades.
Accompanied by his loyal sidekick Telemachus (Franco Giacobini) and the dashing adventurer Theseus (George Ardisson), Hercules embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld. Unbeknownst to them, the conspiracy is orchestrated by Deianira’s treacherous guardian, King Lico (Christopher Lee). Lico is secretly in league with dark demonic forces, seeking to sacrifice the princess to attain immortality. To save his true love, Hercules must fight his way through treacherous caverns of fire, face wave after wave of flesh-eating ghouls, and cross blades with a malevolent, vampire-allied king in an unforgettable climax of mythological terror.

- Co-writer and director Mario Bava was already establishing himself as a visionary auteur of Italian genre cinema, having directed the gothic horror masterpiece Black Sunday just one year prior in 1960.
- Working with an extremely modest budget, Bava utilized ingenious studio trickery, miniature models, and his trademark painterly command of colored lighting to transform tiny soundstages into a vast, surreal, and terrifying underworld.
- Lead actor Reg Park was a legendary British professional bodybuilder and Mr. Universe winner; years later, Park would serve as an influential mentor and physical inspiration to a young Arnold Schwarzenegger.
